I am very excited to share my PAW Plan (Prioritize Animal Welfare) with everyone today! I’m very passionate about animal welfare. Together we will make it a priority in Cumberland County!
We’ve all heard and many have experienced the horror stories and seen disturbing photos of abuse & neglect that come with them. For some unknown and unacceptable reason very little to no action continues to be the stock response from those in a position to provide necessary resources, strength building support and much needed relief in addition to shaping and influencing the laws and policies of the land locally. With each passing day that the issue remains a grey area left up to interpretation, the case for prioritizing Animal Welfare in Cumberland County is only made stronger.
When I am Mayor of Cumberland County the continued kicking of the Animal Welfare can further and further down the road will no longer be tolerated, it will STOP. We will take responsibility for our community and how we value life within it’s confines along with the fears, input and concerns that Cumberland Countians bring to the table for our leaders to address.
My plan to Prioritize Animal Welfare in Cumberland County is plain and simple. The PAW (Prioritize Animal Welfare) Plan consists of four main aspects to make Animal Welfare a priority within our community in 2018.
Strengthen Community and Law Enforcement Resources.
1. As it stands now Cumberland County has what is referred to as Animal Control Officers. While hard working and good folks, animal control officers are not official, equipped, trained law enforcement officers. Animal Control has no authority in enforcing current laws. In order to take instances of abuse and neglect punishable byTennessee state law seriously, we must have bonafide law enforcement officers on the street who are equipped, educated and trained in animal related laws currently on the books. The first step in The PAW Plan calls for the hiring and training of two qualified, capable Animal Control Law Enforcement Officers. These officers will specialize in handling calls/cases concerning Animal Welfare. We must take instances of abuse and neglect seriously in Cumberland County if we wish to see them decrease. As your Mayor, helping our Sheriff locate funding for these new positions will be a priority of the Mayor’s Office on day one.
Instill Pride & Professionalism with Mandatory Annual Policy and Procedures Evaluations of Animal Control and The Cumberland County Animal Shelter.
2. We must invest in our personnel by training and educating our shelter facility employees in professional and proper ways in serving the public as well as how to best accomplish the goals of their assigned positions. Which includes coordinating surrenders & adoptions, transports, pursuing and accepting contributions from the public all with the common goal in mind of becoming a leader in the field. We can accomplish much of this by updating our Policy & Procedures on an annual basis insuring our community’s place in line with current innovations, technology and community attitudes as well as the facility’s needs.
Educating our children in order to break the cycle of Abuse & Neglect of the voiceless
3. Education is a powerful tool. In order to break vicious cycles of abuse & neglect of animals and change systematic destructive paths of our children, educating them on Animal Welfare and the issues surrounding it will be a necessity. When I am Mayor of Cumberland County I will pursue the development of an educational program for our Elementary and Middle School age children that promotes a healthy awareness and consideration for pets and animals in general. I will strongly encourage the joining of the Cumberland County Animal Control Dept. Director with our local Animal Welfare focussed groups like FOCCAS to help us secure funding for this initiative while developing a meaningful curriculum that will promote good, positive change in the way our children discern humane from inhumane treatment of animals and promote a healthy attitude toward them.
Be Cumberland County’s Champion at the state and federal level by promoting our strides in Prioritizing Animal Welfare to our state and federal leaders who make the laws.
4. As Mayor of Cumberland County my job will be to champion the positive changes we’re making in Cumberland County every day with the full confidence that through promoting our great strides we can make a true difference at the state and national level. Developing meaningful working relationships with our state and federal leaders will be vital in the promotion of the change we wish to see. Pushing for new laws and strengthening those in existence that stress legitimate accountability and/or harsher punishments placed on offenses so that a strong message will be sent. Feel Good laws that merely serve as talking points from behind the podium with no teeth to affect real change have got to go.
